Readathon

The PS133 Readathon is a reading competition with pizza parties & book bundles as prizes for the classes and individuals that log the most minutes during the month of February. We are promoting reading and literacy. It's also a fundraiser for the vital programs supported by the PTA. Learn more by watching the video below.

Frequently Asked Questions

SIGNING UP
  • Where can I sign up? Here!
  • Whose name should I use on the sign-up form? Whose email? Please use your child’s first and last name and the caregiver’s email address.
  • How can I make sure my kid contributes to their classroom’s minutes? When signing up, enter the grade and classroom teacher. ALSO, on the second page after signing up, you will be given an option to “Join a Team”. These are the classrooms - choose your child’s teacher and join their team.
  • Is there a prize for signing up? YES! We are in fact giving out participation awards. Every child who creates an account will get a very special PS 133 Readathon pencil.
  • HOT TIP: Bookmark your child’s page after it has been created. You will need to return to it to log minutes.

FUNDRAISING

  • Is this a PTA fundraiser? Yes! Every dollar raised during Readathon goes to supporting our school via the PTA.
  • How much are we raising? This year’s goal is $17,000. Every dollar counts!
  • Do I have to fundraise? Nope - this is about encouraging a love of READING first and foremost. If you are not in a position to fundraise, please participate anyway.
  • How do I fundraise? Send your child’s individual Readathon page to everyone you know. We recommend posting on social media, emailing to relatives and friends, and text-blasting! People (including you!) can donate by clicking on the huge “Make a Donation” button.

5. Are there prizes for fundraising? The pride and joy of knowing you’ve helped fund important initiatives at your child’s school.
6. Is there an even easier way to donate? Yes! You can distribute this direct donation link:

MINUTES & PRIZES

  • How do I log minutes? Go to your child’s page and click the “Log Reading Minutes” button. This button will not show up until Feb 1st, but it looks like this:
log minutes
  1. Where’s the reading timer? There is not one. We’re using a new platform this year. You will need to track your child’s minutes on your own and log them onto the site. We encourage you to do it every day that your child reads instead of all at once at the end.
  2. How much of this contest involves The Honor System? A lot. No one will cheat. No pizza is so delicious that anyone would be tempted to rob a voracious reader of their rightful prize, right?
  3. I have multiple students at the school. If we read together as a family, who gets to log minutes? Any child with an account who has participated in reading (reading together as a family, reading to a sibling, being read to by a sibling, reading alone, etc.) can log minutes. If you read to your three children for 20 minutes, you can log 20 minutes of reading on each of the three accounts.
  4. Does listening to an audiobook count? How about reading a graphic novel? Reading via Raz Kids on the iPad? All reading of books, in any format, counts as reading.
  5. What are the PRIZES? This is all my child cares about!
    1. Grand prize class: the classroom that reads the most overall minutes in the whole school will win a pizza party
    2. Grade level class prize: the classrooms that read the most minutes in each grade will win a popsicle party
    3. Individual winner in each grade: the student that reads the most in each grade will win a book bundle & prize bag
    4. Bookmark prize: the two students that win the bookmark contest will win a book bundle & prize bag
6. Should teachers create accounts for themselves and join their own teams? Yes. Teachers’ accounts will be used to log reading minutes for the whole class that are earned through classroom visitors and other read-alouds.
7. If a visitor reads for 28 minutes to a class of 28 students, who gets credit for what? Good question! The teacher should log those 784 minutes (28x28) into their own account. But no student should log those 28 minutes to their account individually. The class as a whole gets the credit for the read aloud session.
